About Jane

Jane, age six
I am a perpetual artist, student, writer, a widow, and mother of three sons.

Although an art student, in college, I chose to study Biological/Physical Anthropology, but later settled on History, Art History, and Literature, focusing on the 19th century and Romantics. For my entire life, I have studied Religion and Belief, Folklore and Fairy Tales at school and on my own. There was no degree and focus on Folklore and Fairy Tales. I had to make my own.

When younger, I made a living tutoring at-risk youth, worked as a copyeditor, book doctor, ghost writer,  reader, and eventual developmental editor (took years) in the NYC publishing industry and published novels for St. Martins, HarperCollins, Kensington, Crown, Dorchester, and others under pen names (many co-authored with friend, writer Virginia Brown). I left that business after 16 years.

At present, I am writing on The Ambitious Fairy Project, a novel about obsession, folklore, history, and fairy stories. It's really my love letter to Victorian fantasy and magic and portal fantasy. My fiction and art these days are inspired by fairy tales, their tellers, folklore, myth, nature, local landscapes, and how people are tied to history and the past.

As an artist, I am fond of narrative art. Lately I paint flowers and lots of insects, things that fly. I keep a garden.  Makes sense.

I occasionally take on developmental editing and copyediting projects, but do not actively pursue them at this time. I sometimes teach writing locally. I am not reading manuscripts at this time for anyone. (2024)

P.S. Although "comment" is still on, I no longer address comments and they are all set on approval and none are. At some time I'll set up an email for this blog. Not right now as I am writing full time. You can find me on Twitter/X and message me there OR I am on Facebook most days. That is where I post lots of things, small essays, and discuss my work, my life, etc. If you have a question, Facebook is the best place to direct message me. My profile, Jane Harrington, is set to public. Smiling.
